Why won't my Fiat 500X start?

Yes, exactly the same. Both vehicles are built on the FCA Small Wide 4×4 platform and share the same electric steering lock. The lock on Fiat/Jeep platforms includes a secure microcontroller that encrypts its communications with the BCM — it's a newer and more complex architecture than on Renault Laguna/Mégane for example. Technically, the repair requires specific programming equipment and longer intervention time (access to secure memory, load testing). This additional cost is offset compared to the dealership solution: €600-900 for a new part + €150-250 for BCM coding.

Where is the steering column lock on a 500X / Renegade?

The lock is located behind the bottom of the steering wheel, just above the airbag clock spring, at the steering column. To access it: remove the lower column cover (3-4 screws), remove the ignition switch (torx screws), then remove the lock itself (2 break-off security screws that need to be carefully removed). Can I temporarily start my 500X while waiting for the repair?

Unfortunately not, unlike some Renault models, there is no known forced unlocking procedure on FCA Small Wide platforms. When the lock fails, the BCM permanently blocks starting until resolved. If you are stuck in an emergency, a tow truck can transfer the vehicle on a flatbed (note: due to the locked steering, traditional towing is not recommended).
