Mercedes EZS Repair for C-Class, E-Class, CLK, CLS, and Sprinter
The EZS (Elektronisches Zündschloss, also known as N73 in Mercedes nomenclature) is the electronic module that replaces the traditional ignition lock on most Mercedes vehicles since 1997. It reads the car key, authorizes the start, manages the anti-theft system, and communicates with the engine ECU and the SAM. When it fails, your Mercedes becomes unusable: the key no longer turns, the start is refused, or the vehicle displays "Key not recognized" / "Start impossible".
At Incarline, we repair your original EZS for a flat rate of €319 — DHL pickup and return included, with a 2-year warranty. Your original car key remains functional, no pairing at Mercedes required.
Applicable Mercedes Vehicles
- C-Class W203 (2000-2007) — sedan, estate, Sportcoupé
- E-Class W211 (2002-2009) — sedan, estate (S211), E55/E63 AMG
- CLK W209 (2002-2009) — coupe and convertible
- CLS W219 (2004-2010)
- G-Class W463 (post-2001 versions equipped with EZS)
- Vito / Viano W639 (2003-2014)
- Sprinter W906 (2006-2018)
- A-Class W168 / W169 and B-Class W245 (versions equipped with EZS)
- ML-Class W163 / W164, GL-Class X164, R-Class W251
Typical Symptoms of a Faulty Mercedes EZS
- The key turns but the vehicle does not start (starter does not engage)
- The key no longer turns in the EZS, stuck in position 0 or 1
- Message on the instrument cluster: "Key not recognized", "Insert key", "Start impossible"
- The vehicle starts intermittently (once every two attempts, then not at all)
- Anti-theft / key warning light stays on or blinks on the dashboard
- Frequent fault codes: B1031, B1030, P1525, P1693 (EZS ↔ ECU communication)
- Abnormal battery drain when parked (faulty EZS remains in active standby)
Why Repair Instead of Replace
- New Mercedes EZS: €700 to €1,100 depending on the model + mandatory pairing at Mercedes (€150-400) because the new EZS is blank and must be synchronized with your engine ECU and original keys
- Used EZS: unusable — the EZS is coded with the engine ECU and keys of the original vehicle, installing a used part causes a pairing refusal (Mercedes proprietary procedure)
- Incarline Repair: €319 including VAT, DHL pickup and return included, your original EZS is retained so no pairing at Mercedes required
- Your original keys remain functional — no need to recode or buy new keys
- 2-year warranty
Important Technical Point
The most common failure in the Mercedes EZS is the internal microcontroller (often a Motorola MC68HC908) and/or its power stage capacitors that degrade over time and heat. Our intervention involves replacing these faulty components and verifying the integrity of the EEPROM memory (which contains the pairing with your engine ECU) — this EEPROM is preserved identically during the repair.
Send a key from your vehicle with the EZS: it allows us to perform a bench pairing test before return, to ensure that your vehicle will start on the first try after reassembly. The key is, of course, returned with the EZS.
How It Works
- Order the repair on our website (€319 including VAT)
- Remove the EZS from your vehicle — accessible behind the steering wheel, on the steering column (1-2 hours of labor depending on the model)
- Pack the EZS with a key from the vehicle (essential for the pairing test)
- DHL picks up the package from your location on the date you choose
- Diagnosis, repair, bench pairing test within 48 to 72 business hours
- Return at our expense, EZS + key, ready to reinstall without a visit to Mercedes
