Ford PowerShift TCU Cloning — Fiesta, Focus, B-Max, EcoSport

The Ford PowerShift automatic transmission (technical reference 6DCT250, also known as DPS6) is equipped in Ford Fiesta, Focus, B-Max, and EcoSport produced between 2011 and 2017. It is among the most problematic transmissions on the market — to the extent that it has led to class actions in the United States and an extension of the manufacturer's warranty in several European countries.

Typical symptoms: shaking at start-up, violent jerks during gear shifts, unexpected neutral shift, limp mode stuck in 3rd, flashing PRNDS light. In most cases, the cause is a failure of the TCU/TCM (Transmission Control Module) that controls the gearbox.

At Incarline, we clone your original PowerShift TCU to a compatible donor TCU — a much less expensive solution than a complete replacement at the dealership. Package €249 VAT included, DHL pickup and return included, 2-year warranty.

Applicable Ford Vehicles

  • Ford Fiesta VI (2011-2017) — 1.0 EcoBoost and 1.6 TDCi PowerShift engines
  • Ford Focus III (2011-2018) — 1.0 EcoBoost, 1.6 EcoBoost, 2.0 TDCi PowerShift
  • Ford B-Max (2012-2017) — petrol and diesel PowerShift
  • Ford EcoSport (2013-2017) — PowerShift version only
  • Ford Tourneo Courier PowerShift (rare)

Fiesta, Focus, and Kuga from 2018-2019 use a different PowerShift gearbox (8F35 Aisin) — contact us if you are unsure about your model.

Typical Symptoms of a Faulty PowerShift 6DCT250

  • Violent shaking at start-up, especially uphill
  • Jerks during gear shifts (1→2, 2→3 especially)
  • Unexpected neutral shift while driving — the car cuts all propulsion
  • Refusal to start — message "Transmission service required" or equivalent
  • Limp mode stuck in 3rd or 5th
  • Flashing PRNDS light with dashboard alert
  • Shifts too long or abruptly fast (abnormal behavior)
  • Forscan / IDS fault codes: P0842, P0843, P077F, P0776, P0717, P0722, P1636
  • Sound of "sharp clack" during cold start

Why is the PowerShift 6DCT250 so problematic?

Three design issues accumulate in this gearbox:

  1. Dry clutches (double clutch dry) instead of oil bath — rapid wear with urban heat
  2. TCU exposed to vibrations and heat — the electronic board undergoes high thermal stress, solder joints and components age prematurely
  3. Hydraulic leaks (internal seal) that degrade the TCU over time

Ford has issued several recalls and extended the warranty to 10 years/240,000 km in the United States. In Europe, depending on the country and dealerships, occasional coverage is granted — but most out-of-warranty vehicles are left to the owner's responsibility.

Why clone instead of replacing at Ford?

  • New TCU replacement at Ford: €1,200 to €2,000 per unit + €400-600 mandatory IDS programming + adaptations — total €1,800 to €2,800
  • Complete gearbox replacement: €4,500 to €7,000 depending on dealership — sometimes wrongly proposed when only the TCU is defective
  • Used TCU alone: unusable without cloning (original vehicle coding, VIN, learnings)
  • Incarline Cloning: €249 VAT included all-inclusive, your adaptations retained, no dealership intervention required
  • 2-year warranty

How Cloning Works

We transfer the entire content of your original TCU (vehicle coding, VIN, clutch and gear adaptations, internal counters) to a physically functional donor TCU. Therefore, you must provide us with:

  1. Your original TCU — located on the PowerShift gearbox, generally accessible without complete removal of the gearbox (varies by model)
  2. A compatible donor TCU — identical manufacturer reference (e.g., AE8P-7Z369-AJ, CM5P-14B531-XX), purchasable new from Ford or used from a scrapyard

Check compatibility with us before purchasing your donor: send us a photo of the TCU label via our contact form — we confirm within 24 hours.

How It Works

  1. Reference verification of your TCU and purchase of the compatible donor
  2. Order the cloning on our site (€249 VAT included)
  3. Remove your TCU — ideally requires a workshop equipped (gearbox in place, access via side cover)
  4. DHL picks up the two TCUs from your location
  5. Cloning and bench testing within 72 working hours
  6. Return of the cloned TCU + your old TCU, ready to reinstall without IDS or Forscan

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we receive most often.

  • Yes, the PowerShift 6DCT250 (DPS6) equipping the Fiesta, Focus, B-Max, and EcoSport between 2011 and 2017 indeed has several documented design flaws: undersized dry clutches for urban use, TCU exposed to vibrations and heat, frequent hydraulic leaks. In the United States, Ford was condemned in a class action and extended the warranty to 10 years/240,000 km. In Europe, coverage depends on dealerships and the country. Many out-of-warranty vehicles present costly faults to address — this is precisely why our clients consult us.
