Mercedes EZS Cloning — When Repair Is No Longer Possible

When a Mercedes EZS (Elektronisches Zündschloss, module N73) is physically destroyed — microcontroller permanently burnt out, motherboard charred, connectors torn off, immersion damage — traditional repair is no longer feasible. In this case, cloning is the only alternative to dealership replacement (which costs €700 to €1,800 + pairing).

The principle: we retrieve the still readable software data from your faulty EZS (engine ECU pairing, car key coding, VIN) and transfer it to a physically functional donor EZS. Package €399 incl. VAT — DHL collection and return included, your original car keys remain functional, no dealership visit required.

When to Clone Instead of Repair?

Mercedes EZS repair remains our first choice (€319 for standard series, €369 for W221 — see our repair services). Cloning is indicated when:

  • Microcontroller permanently burnt out (after severe short circuit or overvoltage)
  • Physically damaged electronic board (broken tracks, charred components)
  • Immersion damage (flooded vehicle) — irreversible corrosion
  • Forced disassembly attempt that broke the main connector
  • Partially unreadable EEPROM but with some recoverable data

Upon receiving your EZS, we first perform a complete diagnosis. If traditional repair is possible, we offer to switch to this service (€319-369) with a refund of the difference — no unnecessary cloning.

Typical Symptoms of an Irrecoverable Mercedes EZS

  • EZS completely silent: no reaction to car key insertion
  • Visible short circuit inside the unit (burnt smell, blackened components)

How Cloning Works — Important to Understand

Cloning is not a repair: it is the transfer of software data (CAS + engine ECU pairing, car key coding, VIN) from your faulty EZS to a physically sound donor EZS. You must therefore send us two EZS units:

  1. Your original EZS (the faulty one) — contains the data to be cloned, even if its board is damaged, the EEPROM memory is generally readable
  2. A compatible donor EZS — strictly identical manufacturer reference (number A00x xxx xx xx engraved on the label), either new from Mercedes or used from a scrapyard. It must be physically functional.

Reference compatibility: send us a photo of your EZS label via our contact form — we confirm compatible donor references for free within 24 hours. Note, for S-Class W221, references are more sensitive (the Keyless-Go system imposes additional constraints).

How It Works

  1. Check the EZS reference of your vehicle and obtain a compatible donor EZS
  2. Order the cloning on our website (€399 incl. VAT)
  3. Remove your faulty EZS — located on the steering column (remove steering wheel/airbag/column cover)
  4. Pack the two EZS units + a car key in a protected package
  5. DHL collects the package from you on the date you choose
  6. Diagnosis, data extraction, cloning, and bench test with your car key within 72 business hours
  7. Return at our expense of the cloned EZS + car key + your old EZS (for recycling), ready to reinstall
