Car thefts: a historic decrease in 2022
A specialist in automotive information, Autoplus informs us that last year, while we were confined twice for a total of 3 and a half months, the number of vehicle thefts recorded a 13% decrease compared to 2021. These thefts represent 121,000 vehicles, or about 331 cars stolen per day in 2022. A record decrease explained, among other things, by the lockdown which unfortunately did not stop all criminals.
Top 10 most stolen cars in 2022
Contrary to popular belief, thieves do not only target new or trendy models.
Their modus operandi? Act discreetly and without breaking in using a reformatted electronic car key. This is called mouse-jacking. A technique used in 75% of cases. It allows the electronic security system of the vehicle to be hacked. In this way, the vehicle is unlocked and the thieves can start it. A method among many others that unfortunately affected many motorists in 2022:
For the most part, the vehicles affected by theft are relatively recent, like the DS7 Crossback, which was by far the most stolen vehicle in 2022. But, already in 2021, SUVs were the cars that attracted the most thieves.
It is also noted that small city cars like the Smart Fortwo or the Renault Mégane RS, as well as crossovers, have also been major targets for thieves.
