What is immo off?
In a modern car, the engine only starts if the ECU recognizes a valid car key via the immobilizer (electronic anti-theft). Immo off reprograms the ECU software to remove this condition: the engine then runs without key control on the immobilizer side. It is also referred to as "immobilizer deactivation" or "immo bypass."
It is a troubleshooting solution when a faulty immobilizer wrongly prevents starting, or when installing a used ECU that is not paired with the vehicle. The goal: to reliably get the car running again without changing the entire anti-theft system.
How does the immobilizer work?
The immobilizer relies on an exchange of codes between several electronic units. At each start, the system checks that the presented car key matches the vehicle.
The car key (transponder) ↔ ECU dialogue
The car key contains a chip (RFID transponder) that sends a code. This code passes through the immobilizer unit — often the BSI at PSA or the UCH at Renault — and is then compared to the data stored in the engine ECU. If everything matches, injection and starting are authorized. Any faulty link (car key, antenna, unit, ECU) blocks the car.

When to perform an immo off? Symptoms and use cases
Key light on, engine stalls or won't start
Key or padlock-shaped light on, engine starts then stalls immediately, or starter turns "in vain" without the engine catching: these are classic symptoms of an immobilizer no longer validating the car key.
Total loss of keys or unrecognized key
In case of total loss of keys, or a faulty car key that cannot be reprogrammed, immo off allows the vehicle to restart without relying on the original anti-theft system.
Installation of a used ECU
A used ECU remains paired to its former vehicle. Rather than a manufacturer resynchronization (sometimes impossible or costly), immo off makes it functional on your car.

Depending on the type of ECU
The method varies according to the electronics: Bosch (EDC15, EDC16, EDC17, ME7, MED17), Siemens/Continental (SID), Delphi, Valeo, or Magneti Marelli do not use the same procedures. Hence the importance of a specialist who masters each ECU family, for a clean result without "bricking" the ECU.
Immo off: is it legal? MOT and insurance
Let's be transparent. Immo off acts on the vehicle's anti-theft: it does not modify emissions or safety devices (braking, airbag), and is not checked during the MOT. However, it remains your responsibility, as the owner, to keep a vehicle protected against theft. We therefore reserve this intervention for legitimate troubleshooting cases (faulty immobilizer, lost keys, used ECU) and on vehicles you own.
