Immo off: what it is, how it works, price and legality

Immo off: what it's used for, how a professional deactivates the immobilizer on the engine ECU, in which cases, at what price, and what the law says (MOT, insurance).

Immo off (or "immo off ECU") involves disabling the immobilizer function managed by the vehicle's engine ECU, so it starts and runs without communicating with the original immobilizer system. It is a software intervention performed directly in the ECU — not to be confused with mechanically forcing a lock. At Incarline, a specialist in automotive electronics, it is a common and well-mastered operation.

What is immo off?

In a modern car, the engine only starts if the ECU recognizes a valid car key via the immobilizer (electronic anti-theft). Immo off reprograms the ECU software to remove this condition: the engine then runs without key control on the immobilizer side. It is also referred to as "immobilizer deactivation" or "immo bypass."

It is a troubleshooting solution when a faulty immobilizer wrongly prevents starting, or when installing a used ECU that is not paired with the vehicle. The goal: to reliably get the car running again without changing the entire anti-theft system.

How does the immobilizer work?

The immobilizer relies on an exchange of codes between several electronic units. At each start, the system checks that the presented car key matches the vehicle.

The car key (transponder) ↔ ECU dialogue

The car key contains a chip (RFID transponder) that sends a code. This code passes through the immobilizer unit — often the BSI at PSA or the UCH at Renault — and is then compared to the data stored in the engine ECU. If everything matches, injection and starting are authorized. Any faulty link (car key, antenna, unit, ECU) blocks the car.

Immo off, virginization, or cloning: what's the difference?

InterventionWhat it doesWhen to use it
Immo offRemoves the immobilizer from the ECUFaulty immobilizer, lost keys
VirginizationResets the ECU to a blank stateRe-pair an ECU to the vehicle
CloningCopies the ECU to a new or used oneReplace without manufacturer repro

The right choice depends on the diagnosis: a professional determines if an immo off is sufficient or if virginization/cloning is more appropriate.

When to perform an immo off? Symptoms and use cases

Key light on, engine stalls or won't start

Key or padlock-shaped light on, engine starts then stalls immediately, or starter turns "in vain" without the engine catching: these are classic symptoms of an immobilizer no longer validating the car key.

Total loss of keys or unrecognized key

In case of total loss of keys, or a faulty car key that cannot be reprogrammed, immo off allows the vehicle to restart without relying on the original anti-theft system.

Installation of a used ECU

A used ECU remains paired to its former vehicle. Rather than a manufacturer resynchronization (sometimes impossible or costly), immo off makes it functional on your car.

How is the deactivation performed?

The steps in the workshop

  • Precise identification of the ECU (brand, hardware, and software reference).
  • Reading the ECU's EEPROM/flash (on bench or via OBD depending on the case).
  • Targeted software modification to neutralize the immobilizer routine.
  • Rewriting and checking for proper operation (starting, absence of faults).

Depending on the type of ECU

The method varies according to the electronics: Bosch (EDC15, EDC16, EDC17, ME7, MED17), Siemens/Continental (SID), Delphi, Valeo, or Magneti Marelli do not use the same procedures. Hence the importance of a specialist who masters each ECU family, for a clean result without "bricking" the ECU.

Immo off: is it legal? MOT and insurance

Let's be transparent. Immo off acts on the vehicle's anti-theft: it does not modify emissions or safety devices (braking, airbag), and is not checked during the MOT. However, it remains your responsibility, as the owner, to keep a vehicle protected against theft. We therefore reserve this intervention for legitimate troubleshooting cases (faulty immobilizer, lost keys, used ECU) and on vehicles you own. If in doubt about your situation (insurance, resale), ask us for advice before intervention.

How much does an immo off cost?

The price depends on the ECU and the necessary method. Count from €120 including VAT as an indication; the exact price is confirmed on a free quote after identifying your ECU. It is almost always much more economical than the complete replacement of the immobilizer system or a new manufacturer ECU.

Immo off by Incarline: warranty and lead times

Incarline performs immo off on the majority of ECUs on the market, with a 1-year warranty on the intervention and a processing time of 48 to 72 hours excluding transport. Collection and return of your part by carrier are included. Discover the details and start your request on our ECU Immobilizer Deactivation (Immo Off) page, or also check the ECU reset if your need is different.

FAQ — Immo off

Does immo off prevent restarting later with a car key?

No: once the immobilizer is deactivated, the engine starts without key control on the immobilizer side. The car key is still used to open and activate the ignition.

Do you need to send the ECU or the car?

In most cases, the intervention is done on the ECU alone: you send it to us (collection and return included), we process it, you reinstall it. Some cases are handled via OBD.

Does immo off pass the MOT?

Yes, the immobilizer is not a point checked during the MOT. Immo off has no impact on emissions or safety components.

Immo off or replace the entire anti-theft?

Immo off is almost always faster and cheaper than replacing an immobilizer unit or a new ECU to be reprogrammed at the manufacturer.

Which brands do you work on?

On the vast majority of brands and ECUs (Bosch, Siemens/Continental, Delphi, Valeo, Magneti Marelli). Provide us with your model and the ECU reference for a precise quote.
