New vehicles will be equipped with a black box from 2022

In May 2022, your new car will be equipped with a rather special device: the black box. Like in an airplane, it will allow understanding and studying an accident based on your driving and traffic conditions. Let us explain!

Black box: an equipment soon to be indispensable

After airbags, ESP, or even the third brake light, new vehicles will soon have a new mandatory equipment: the black box. Manufacturers will indeed have to integrate this data recorder from May 2022, already implemented for several years in Italy and Asia.

According to l’Argus, the goal is to understand and explain the reasons and circumstances of an accident. New and existing models will have to be equipped with this device by May 2024. Discreet, the black box will be invisible to drivers, which will prevent any modification of the system by some dishonest motorists.

How does the black box work exactly?

Specifically, the data recorded by this ingenious device will take into account the seconds before and after the accident, including certain elements such as:

  • the vehicle's speed
  • braking and acceleration
  • seat belt usage (passenger and driver)
  • GPS coordinates of the accident

The GDPR regulation is working on greater protection of individuals' private data, particularly concerning the recording of personal conversations on board. A question that has not yet been resolved. The retention period of these data must also be defined by the European Parliament.

In any case, be aware that insurers will not have access to the data recorded by these black boxes. Moreover, the collected information will not allow tracing back to the identity of the vehicle's driver. Finally, black boxes will be installed only on new cars: owners of used vehicles will not be required to equip themselves to be able to drive.

What is the cost of this new equipment?

For now, no price has been announced yet, but some manufacturers already specify that the addition of this new equipment will have repercussions on car prices. Regarding your insurance premium, for now, no change is expected.
